Sector cements plans for US philanthropy summit

The leaders of Britain's largest charitable foundations are to meet this week to plan a summit of US and UK foundations in New York in November.

The philanthropy convention, announced by Gordon Brown in the spring, will be hosted by the Carnegie Corporation. Leaders of Scotland's Hunter Foundation and America's Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will also be there.

The US will contribute information from its huge foundation sector, and the UK's Charity Commission will share its regulatory expertise.

"I would welcome any exchange of ideas between funders," said David Emerson, chief executive of the Association of Charitable Foundations. "The world of US foundations is vast and it dwarfs the UK scene."

Emerson denied that bolstering links with US foundations would affect existing UK ties with Europe. "Just because we are now doing something extra with US foundations, that does not mean we are excluding European foundations," he said.
