Sector 'must lead green revolution'

Nathalie Thomas

Voluntary organisations should take the lead in the green revolution, according to David Miliband - including those that don't work for environmental causes.

In an attempt to get the sector on board in the battle against climate change, the third sector minister has launched a new scheme that encourages voluntary bodies of all persuasions to introduce measures such as energy-saving light bulbs, car-sharing schemes and group recycling initiatives.

"The sector has a crucial role to play in environmental sustainability, employing more than half of all community workers, who in turn support thousands of local groups across the country," Miliband said.

"It can help these groups take action on the environment as well as lead by example in showing local groups how it is putting environmental sustainability into practice."
