DotComUnity is a Dorset-based community interest company whose website provides a one-stop shop for community services and care information for people with learning or physical disabilities.

Development

The site, which DotComUnity describes as "the Yellow Pages for disabled people and their carers and families", was launched in February to support people across the disability sector. To date, it has attracted 15,000 members, who can view details of 70,000 groups and activities listed by 26,000 organisations.

Design and content

Visitors are greeted on the home page by a map of the UK. After selecting their location, they are taken to a local page with details of services and events in that region, along with other useful information such as employment opportunities and details of grantmakers.

Special features

Anyone can use the site, but those who register can award gold stars, which determine the order of search listings, to services they like.

In a 'Your Life' section, currently being piloted, visitors will be able to personalise content in a secure area where they can 'store valuables', such as their CV, accreditations and qualifications, along with general content such as music and pictures.

DotComUnity says

"It is a valuable tool for service users and an opportunity for organisations looking to promote their services either in their communities or to 1.5 million people with learning disabilities, six million who support them and 10 million with physical disabilities."

Charity property: could you be entitled to a huge VAT saving?

Partner Content: Presented By Markel

When a property is being constructed, VAT is charged at the standard rate. But if you're a charity, health body, educational institution, housing association or finance house, the work may well fall into a category that justifies zero-rating - and you could make a massive saving
