World Jewish Relief
Agency: Totally Communications
World Jewish Relief, which was founded in 1933, is the main overseas aid arm of the UK Jewish community, providing food, medication and fuel to Jewish people around the world.
Most charities incorporate fundraising on their websites, but WJR has departed from the norm by developing a separate fundraising site, www.mywjr.org.uk. Launched about a year ago, it was funded by a gift from a major donor and promoted in the Jewish press and in emails to the charity's supporters. Links with the charity's main site are expected to be improved when the latter is redesigned at the end of the year.
Design and content
The site follows a fairly standard design and requires a log-in account. Visitors can set up their own sponsorship pages and create pages for any chosen fundraising activities, such as challenge events and bar and bat mitzvah twinning. Donors can customise their pages with their own photos and view messages of support.
The concept of the site is highly unusual: a dedicated fundraising page, similar to sites such as Just Giving, but for donations purely to WJR and without commission charges. The site displays the Fundraising Standards Board tick logo, indicating membership. So far, it has attracted 300 new donors, whose data has been captured for future fundraising, and generated £40,000.
"The revolutionary online fundraising service is the first non-commission sponsorship site that has been specifically designed for a Jewish charity, ensuring that all proceeds go directly to WJR and the clients it supports."
