Yorkshire Wildlife Trust protects and restores Yorkshire's wild places and wildlife.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is one of 47 wildlife trusts that are independent charities and members of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, a national body that represents their interests. The national body used a grant it received to develop a web platform for local trusts. Yorkshire was one of the first 10 to acquire the new platform, which has a content management system that allows each charity to update its own site.

Design and content

The home page contains a striking main image of a bird and is designed in the charity's blue and green colours. Scroll down and there are ways to get involved followed by more content, including news. It's a busy, visual home page, but clear signposting makes it vibrant rather than confusing.

Special features

The "Find a reserve" tab on the home page enables visitors to search a map showing nature reserves across northern England. Unlike the old site, the latest version is integrated across social media, with links to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr. The week before we visited the site, YouTube informed the charity that a video on its YouTube page showing a sei whale stranded at Skeffling was the most watched not-for-profit video in the world. National newspapers and Yahoo! US news covered the story.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust says:

"The site provides a fresh way of promoting wildlife conservation. It captures how vibrant wildlife conservation is in the UK in a way that will particularly engage young people."
