Snapshot: Flight of inspiration

Volunteering England rewarded 140 of the most dedicated volunteers in the country with a 'flight' on the British Airways London Eye to celebrate Volunteers' Week, currently running from 1-7 June.

A film was made of the volunteers' stories at the event last month, to be shown on the Community Channel this week in an attempt to inspire others to volunteer. Twelve organisations were represented, including the National Trust, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Macmillan Cancer Relief. But a survey by KPMG reveals that awareness of the event is still low. It found that 87 per cent of people had no idea that this week is Volunteer's Week.

Only 4 per cent of employees are given time off to volunteer, and just 6 per cent take unpaid leave to do voluntary work. Almost two-thirds of those who don't volunteer claim it is because they don't have the time.
