SNAPSHOT: Pole to pole

Charity chief executive Michael McGrath, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, will attempt to become the first disabled person to conquer both the north and south poles in January next year.

McGrath, 38, pictured with his friend Chris Cope during his voyage to the earth's most northerly point last year, aims to raise £1 million for the Muscle Help Foundation, the organisation he established to help fund research into muscular dystrophy. He aims to complete his journey on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a skidoo and a sledge before walking the final few yards. "For someone who has difficulty walking at all and very little strength, it is a massive challenge," said McGrath's wife, Sue. His poor circulation means he also feels the cold acutely. Actor Kenneth Branagh is supporting the pole2pole expedition, which is the charity's inaugural event.
