Snapshot: Runway response

Directors from groups including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, and People & Planet launched their Airport Expansion Pledge outside Parliament last week. The pledge, meant to demonstrate public opposition to airport expansion, is a response to last December's White Paper which outlined likely passenger increases at airports and predictions of added runways. The pledge increases pressure on the Government to curb airport expansion because of environmental concerns.

It is not a petition, but an invitation for people to pledge to take personal, peaceful action against airport expansion. "The White Paper was some time ago, and it took time for the various protest groups and environmental groups to decide what to do next," said Richard Dyer, aviation campaigner at Friends of the Earth. "There's more and more anger out there, and it's inevitable that people will take action as they see concrete being poured and they're being woken up by new flight paths they didn't know were coming."
