SNAPSHOT: Singing sensation

Gareth Gates was the surprise guest at NCH's annual Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards in Leeds when he arrived to pick up his Personality of the Year award. Seven other young people from across Yorkshire were named Young Achievers in categories including sport, the arts and management and enterprise. More than £32,000 was raised on the night, which will go towards NCH's adoption, fostering and care projects across the region. Previous celebrity Young Achievers including model Nell McAndrew and actress and TV presenter Malandra Burrows were also present. "In Gareth's case the judges' decision was unanimous and made in record time," said Peter McCormick, chairman of the awards. "His success embodies what the Young Achievers Awards, and NCH, are all about - encouraging and inspiring young people to follow their dreams and reach their potential."
