Stephen Mangan supports the National Brain Appeal

- The Episodes and Green Wing actor Stephen Mangan is supporting the National Brain Appeal's new pyjama party fundraising campaign. The charity is calling on people to show solidarity for those in hospital who are having brain or spine surgery by organising fundraising events such as sleepwalks, midnight feasts, midnight concerts or slumber parties. The campaign is due to run from 20 to 28 October.

- The former Carry On actor Barbara Windsor turned out to support runners in the Orange Appeal 10k run in London on 29 September, in aid of the National Osteoporosis Society, of which she is a patron. Windsor, who did not take part in the run, joined in the warm-up, chatted to fans and handed out the medals to the winners.

- Sophie, Countess of Wessex has been appointed as the new president of the NSPCC. She has been a patron of the children's charity's ChildLine service since 2004.

- The Rainforest Foundation UK is hosting an online auction of one-off gifts that have been donated by celebrities, including the Olympic medallists Tom Daley and Nicola Adams, the Lord of the Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen, the musician Sting and the singer Olivia Newton-John. The 12 Days of Christmas will run from 13 to 25 November. The auction is being hosted on eBay.

- The actor Derek Martin, who played Charlie Slater in BBC1's EastEnders, has adopted Bernadette, a two-year-old labrador springer cross, from the Dogs Trust Harefield.
