Street Smart to roll out £1 homeless tip to three more cities

Street Smart, the Christmas fundraising campaign which adds £1 to restaurant bills and distributes the proceeds to homelessness charities, is to be extended to three further cities this year.

Approximately 50 homelessness charities stand to gain from this year's campaign, which will now cover restaurants in Leeds, Newcastle and Cambridge.

The scheme is already up and running in London, Oxford, Bristol, Brighton, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The fundraising campaign, which has run annually in November and December since 1998, channels money raised in restaurants in a particular city to homelessness groups in the region. The campaign is expected to raise around ?xA3;300,000 this year.

The scheme is sponsored by Barclays bank, which is covering all administration charges, ensuring that all money raised goes to the charities. Last year, recipients included groups such as Homeless and Lonely in Brighton as well as national charities such as Crisis.
