Super starling

Manchester United captain Roy Keane compared himself to a robin last weekend to help launch the RNIB's 25th Big Garden Birdwatch survey. The study aims to find which birds are the most prevalent by asking the public to spend an hour counting birds in their local park or garden.

Last year 314,000 people took part. Keane chose a robin for its distinctive red chest, its aggressiveness in attack, and its fierce competitiveness in its own part of the park. TV entertainer Lily Savage chose the starling, with its shimmering, colourful plumage and reputation as a great gossip.

Other celebrities happy to play along included dancer Wayne Sleep, who thought he resembled a blue tit - agile, small and light on his feet.

A charity spokeswoman said nobody had yet likened themselves to the great tit.
