Sympathy vote

Bernard Jenkin, Conservative MP for North Essex, takes the applause for his rendition of the terzettino from Mozart's Cose Fan Tutti at St John's Church, Smith Square, last week. His fellow singers were Lucy Goodman of the Trinity College of Music and his sister Nicola, a professional soprano. The occasion was the seventh annual Parliamentary Palace of Varieties show, which drew an audience of 600 and raised £80,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief. Another star turn was Labour MP Bob Marshall-Andrews, who performed in drag as Gordon Brown's secretary refusing a Tony Blair request for more money for the Iraq war.
