TB Alert campaigns for more money for care and treatment

Former health secretary Frank Dobson is backing a campaign by TB Alert calling on the NHS to increase resources for tuberculosis care and treatment in London.

The campaign coincided with World TB Day on Monday and comes in the wake of new figures that reveal that TB cases have more than doubled in London during the past 15 years.

The charity is working with Rotary Clubs to reduce diagnosis delays and raise awareness in communities about TB risks.

"Government and health authorities must find the relatively small sums of money needed to ensure there are sufficient TB nurses,

said Paul Sommerfield, chairman of TB Alert.

In a separate campaign, the Government's chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson has launched an awareness programme, supported by TB Alert and other charities including the British Thoracic Society, that specifically targets Asian communities.
