A survey carried out in schools has found that nearly a third of boys aged 14 and 15 think the charity sector is the most boring to work in.

The educational consultancy Magnified Learning asked 1,132 teenagers in schools in Birmingham, London and south-east England for their views on a list of 24 professions.

It found that 28.5 per cent of boys and 15 per cent of girls thought the charity sector the "most boring." on the list. Overall, the charity sector came out as the second most boring.

Only 3.2 per cent of the participants said they most wanted  to work in the charity sector. Energy, environment and public transport were the only sectors that came out as less popular.

Chris Horton, a director at Magnified Learning, which helps businesses work more closely in schools,  said he felt many children associated charities with charity shops.

"I think they associate charities with second-hand goods and the elderly, and don’t see beyond that to big organisations making a difference," he said. "It’s a surprise, because when we work with young people there’s a lot of enthusiasm for setting up enterprise projects that generate funds for good causes."

Keith Mogford, interim chief executive at the skills body Skills – Third Sector, said that if the findings were reliable then there was a challenge for the charitable sector in improving its image among young people.

"I suspect this may have much to do with general media images of the sector, but also with the type of information being given to young people through careers guidance," he said. "Plans to devolve this role further to schools might make the challenge for charities in ensuring a consistent and accurate information flow even harder."
