Telco gains better working conditions for HSBC cleaners

Banking giant HSBC has agreed to implement greatly improved conditions for outsourced cleaners at its London head office, after a three-year campaign by civic activism charity Telco.

Cleaners working for contractors OCS have won pay rises of up to 30 per cent, with eight extra days' holiday a year and 10 days' sick pay.

Telco describes the new deal as "extraordinary in the ruthless world of contract cleaning".

HSBC has followed Barclays in taking responsibility for the conditions for both in-house and contract staff.

Last week, Telco leaders attended HSBC's AGM to thank the board for their change of heart.

The new deal only applies to the bank's Canary Wharf headquarters, not HSBC branches, but Telco has described its adoption as a "positive start".
