Where there's muck

Christmas cards made out of elephant dung have proved an unusual fundraising success for the Church Mission Society, raising more than £1,000 for a project for deaf children in Tanzania. They were sold to tourists at local game parks and in the UK through the society.

One park has also ordered a thousand elephant dung folders to package its annual report and a hotel has ordered dung lampshades and welcome packs. "My main worry now is whether we will be able to keep up with demand," said textile artist Susie Hart, who works for the Church of Tanzania.

The products are made by deaf trainees who, it is hoped, will become the main breadwinners in their families.
