Who is the chair?

Clive Conway has been chair of the social harmony charity the Tutu Foundation UK since October 2014. As well as being a professional flautist, Conway is the owner and chief executive of Clive Conway Productions, which hosts the successful An Audience With… theatre series, offering audiences an evening with household names in showbusiness, current affairs, sport and politics.

How and why was he recruited?

In late 2014, when the charity was seeking a new chair, a number of important projects were coming to an end, with no new ones or funding in place. With funding running low, the charity needed direction. A supporter of the charity knew Conway was interested in the charity’s work and recommended him. Given Conway’s energy and connections in a range of areas, the charity felt he was the right man for the job.

What has he achieved?

Since becoming chair, says the charity, Conway has energised the foundation, building and managing a vibrant and diverse team of trustees, consultants and ambassadors who work together to develop, plan, champion and implement a range of projects promoting peace and reconciliation.

It describes him as someone who inspires, cajoles, persuades and charms all sorts of people to work together to create inspiring projects that change lives and communities.

Conway has single-handedly persuaded 29 people, including politicians, Premier League footballers and members of the clergy, to become ambassadors for the charity.

What did the judges say?

Caitlin Dean, chair of Pregnancy Sickness Support, said: "Clive sounds very enthusiastic and influential. His achievements in forging influential relationships are clearly superb."
