Who is she?

Lisa Mari Hilder took on the voluntary role of trustee and treasurer of Winner, the Preston Road Women's Centre, in 2006. Since then thousands of women and children, both in Hull and across the country ,have benefited from her hard work and commitment.

What has she done?

Hilder’s fundraising skills have helped to raise more than £10m towards women's services in Yorkshire. She has developed strategic planning and income generation for Winner through grant, contract and loan-based income streams, and has particularly focused on social enterprise. A portfolio of housing stock provides safe homes for women and children, and the rental income provides sustainable funding used to provide a range of services.

What else has she achieved?

When reforms to the legal aid system adversely affected many women who were trying to escape dangerous relationships, Hilder came up with an innovative solution. Her work culminated in the launch of the not-for-profit law firm Affordable Justice, which is based at the women's centre and has helped more than 120 women to access legal services.

What did the judges say?

"Lisa's contribution as a volunteer embraces many different strands," said Justin Davis-Smith, senior research fellow at the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business School. "In each of these separate areas she has made a measurable difference to the lives of vulnerable women in Preston, but taken together the impact she has had is outstanding."
