Who is she?

Laura Davies has experienced maternity discrimination, low-paid work, workplace sexism and being stereotyped as a young mum. A few years later, unable to progress in low-paid retail work as a part-time employee with childcare responsibilities, she signed up to the Young Women’s Trust Advisory Panel, a group of young women who share their experiences to raise awareness and influence decision-makers.

What has she done?

Laura has taken part in more than 70 voluntary opportunities for the YWT since getting involved in 2015. She has spoken in parliament about how she was treated during her pregnancy. Through YWT she became involved in the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s Power to the Bump campaign, fighting maternity discrimination and empowering young mothers to stand up for their rights. She delivered workshops for other young mothers and wrote materials for the website.

Laura has spoken at conferences, events and on panels. She interviewed the best-selling crime author Martina Cole on stage at a YWT fundraising event, where they shared stories of being young mothers and facing financial struggles. She also blogs for YWT's website, bringing issues to life through her articulate and honest writing.

What else has she achieved?

At the start of this year Laura gave an inspiring speech about her experiences to an audience of politicians, journalists and supporters at a gender equality event at London's City Hall. She has taken part in live TV and radio broadcasts and been interviewed by journalists about the issues she has experienced. The YWT says Laura is one of the most enthusiastic, dependable young women the charity has worked with.

Highly commended
