What does the team do?

Sarcoma UK's finance and operations team acts as the beating heart of the organisation. Sarcoma UK’s growth, reflected in a year-on-year increase in income of between 14 per cent and 16 per cent over the past few years, has been reflected in demands on the charity’s four-person finance and operations team. Without growing in size, the team processed 39,000 donations over this period, compared with 35,900 in the previous year, a growth of 8 per cent.

What did it achieve?

The new facility to donate through Facebook made processing donations a resource-intensive process. Working with communications, the finance team developed a seamless method of processing donations through this platform, bringing in about £4,000 a month. The new process saves time and resource, and is far more accurate. The team is now working alongside a third party developer that will enable the charity to get a better understanding of who these Facebook donors are, so that those who give through Facebook receive as much acknowledgement and stewardship as any other donor. The team also led the process of General Data Protection Regulation compliance, working with data specialist Protecture and vastly expanding the charity’s privacy policy.

Why did it win?

As the GDPR was being rolled out the finance team was in the middle of its annual audit. Auditor Sayer Vincent struggled to find areas for improvement or any causes for concern, reporting to the charity's board of trustees that "the processes in place are very good and appropriate for the size of the charity" and praising the team for its willingness to take on board and implement the recommendations made each year.
