Michael Shann, Carers UK
Michael Shann, Carers UK

- What does he do?

Shann is the carer ambassador programme manager at Carers UK, a charity that supports people who look after an older, disabled or seriously ill family member or friend.

- What does he do?

Shann's main role has been to manage the carer ambassador programme, set up to get experienced carers to work more closely with local health organisations and train them to provide support to other carers in their areas. He has overseen the design of a national telephone support service and the planning of a nationwide network of volunteers to raise awareness and provide peer support.

- What has he achieved?

Since joining the charity in 2011, Shann has played a crucial role in developing new ways of engaging some of Carers UK's 17,000 members in volunteering opportunities. Before he joined the charity, the contribution made by volunteers was limited mainly to running local branches and volunteering in offices. As a result of his work, volunteer support has become a key part of the charity's work and has enabled Carers UK to offer new opportunities to its members. Carers UK says that Shann's strong leadership, interpersonal skills and planning abilities have been instrumental in the growth of the ambassador programme and the influence of carers in the charity.

- What did the judges say?

Rob Jackson, a volunteering consultant, said: "This is a good example of someone challenging the status quo and demonstrating leadership skills to meet organisational need and the needs of volunteers."

Highly commended
