Time for Health events run through January

A coalition of volunteering organisations is staging a range of events throughout January to encourage more people to volunteer in health and social care.

Health Month ’08 is being run by Time for Health, which was formed in 2006 to promote and provide a representative voice for volunteering in the NHS. It involves a number of charities, including Attend, TimeBank and WRVS.

The first of four volunteer roadshows is taking place in Darlington on Thursday. Another is happening tomorrow in Leicester, with further shows in Ramsgate on Tuesday and London on Wednesday.

There will also be various free training sessions for all those already working with volunteers in health on subjects such as how to recruit disabled volunteers and those from diverse communities.

David Wood, chief executive of Attend, said: “By volunteering with local hospitals, people have an opportunity to get involved and support their local communities. Our aim is to demonstrate the value of volunteering and to open the doors to more volunteers.”

Time for Health is also carrying out surveys of people’s perceptions of volunteering in mental health. The findings will be used to inform future volunteer recruitment initiatives.
