Traid sets sights on high street to sell second-hand clothing

Second-hand clothing could soon be for sale in high-street retail outlets to raise money for international development projects.

Charity retailer Traid has been selling its clothing range in Top Man's Oxford Circus branch for the past two months and hopes to expand the idea across the country and through different retailers. This is the first time a charity shop has had this kind of arrangement with a high-street retailer.

Andrew Edwards, director of Traid, said: "We have had interest from other retailers and would like to branch out. Top Man is keen on us expanding our range to other parts of the country."

But he added that the charity was waiting to see how the first initiative went before rolling the concept out further.

David Shepherd, brand director of Top Man, said: "We are thrilled with the response we have had from the public - demand has been such that the rails are frequently sold out and it is fantastic to give something back to communities at the same time."

The charity shop market is under pressure to keep itself up to date.

Edwards said: "The market has shifted. A number of charities have reduced their retail operations. Rent increases have also made things harder. Many organisations have had to take stock."

Traid also runs shops selling second-hand and customised clothing. Clothing is donated to the charity via clothes banks. Money generated by shops supports the work of UK NGOs such as Oxfam and Care International UK working in many developing countries.

Traid has also had preliminary discussions with Arcadia Group, owners of Top Man, about moving into women's clothing.
