Trust praised for its wage strategy

The Westway Development Trust has been awarded a Beacon Living Wage award by campaigning organisation London Citizens.

The west London charity adopted the London Living Wage of £7.20 for its employees and contractors and encouraged other organisations to follow its example by publishing a toolkit outlining its implementation process and the lessons it learned along the way.

Acevo, The Big Issue and the social entrepreneurs umbrella group UnLtd are some of the third sector bodies to have received Living Wage Employer Awards, but the 'beacon' status is a first for the sector.

Matthew Bolton, community organiser at London Citizens, said: "It makes no sense for charities lobbying on poverty and childhood protection not to look at their own shop first."
