St George's Hospital Charity St George's Hospital Charity

Insider insight from Martyn Willis, chief executive at St George's Hospital Charity, about the trustee role they're recruiting for.

Tell us about St George’s Hospital Charity and what it does

The purpose of St George’s Hospital Charity is to support the Foundation Trust in its delivery of care to patients at St George’s and Queen Mary’s Hospitals, and in the wider Merton and Wandsworth communities, by adding value. In addition, the charity will seek to advance and promote knowledge and education in health care by funding health-related research, working closely with St George’s University of London and by supporting Foundation Trust staff with their career development and wellbeing.

What exciting projects are you working on?

We are always working on many projects, small and large, that benefit patients and staff at St George’s. For example, our medical team is featured in Channel 4 programme ‘24 Hours in A&E’ which is filmed at St George’s. The charity granted £1.4 million to the hospital trust to help upgrade the A&E department. We also hope to be launching a major fundraising project within two years.

What roles are you currently recruiting for?

The charity is recruiting for the role of trustee to work with the existing board to provide governance and guidance to the executive team.

What kind of people are you looking for?

We are looking for people with trustee experience, an interest in the health of the communities of South West London and experience of: the health sector; the local community; law; fundraising, investments/finance, and arts for health.

Why would someone want to work for St George’s Hospital Charity?

Being trustee of a health charity is rewarding and fulfilling. St George’s has a long history with a fantastic reputation for innovation and healthcare delivery, however the trust is currently going through the most challenging period in its history. Therefore, the charity’s ability to provide added benefit will be even more evident.

What opportunities for training and development are there?

Although we are looking for experienced trustees, additional coaching through external seminars, coaching and peer group meetings are available.

What tips would you offer applicants?

Make sure you are able to commit to the time expected of a trustee which can be up to 12 days per year.
