Trustees urged to sign Compact ‘independence pledge’

Trustees are being asked to pledge to use the Compact to resist external interference in their organisations on Local Compact Independence Day on 4 July.

The pledge commits organisations to representing the needs of their communities, campaigning fearlessly for their causes.

The move is a response to an Independence Day survey of local groups last year that indicated their independence was under threat.

"This 4th July, we are campaigning to do something about it by asking groups to take responsibility for their own independence," said Carl Allen, chair of Local Compact Voice.

Local voluntary groups in England are also being asked to lobby their local councils to run open doors sessions on 4 July as part of an initiative aimed at encouraging town and county halls to engage with a wider set of groups and listen to their concerns.
