The Institute of Fundraising has concluded that its 28 codes of practice on different aspects of fundraising are confusing and will publish a single Code of Fundraising Practice later this year.
The new code will be accompanied by up to 30 sets of guidance containing supplementary good practice information on different fundraising techniques and questions such as data protection.
The move comes after a review of the codes between October and March, which included a consultation with members that attracted 300 responses.
IoF members said there were too many codes, that they were too long and that there was too much repetition and cross-referencing between the different codes, according to Gregor McNie, Scotland manager for the IoF, who led work on the review. "The mixture of law, standards and guidance across the codes was confusing," he said.
He said the language used was not clear and could be confusing as well. "There was also the additional message that there has not been enough guidance outside of the codes to support fundraisers in particular fundraising activities," he said.
The new single code will be more easily accessible in an online HTML document, rather than the existing pdfs, said McNie. It is likely to be about 50 pages, compared with 440 pages in the current codes, and will be easy to search, with links to the supporting guidance.
He said the new code would be available to view at the IoF’s National Convention in July and would be launched fully in early autumn. A full report on the review would be published by the end of next week, he said.
"It will still contain legal guidance and the standards for fundraising adjudicated against by the Fundraising Standards Board," he said.
"The concerns raised were so clear across the 300 responses," said McNie. "It will be a robust and well-informed document at the end of it all."
