Adults in the UK are likely to donate £4.8bn to charity in 2015, an average of £110 per person, according to a study.

Research carried out for the Cambridge & Counties Bank, which provides financial services to small and medium-sized organisations, found that 76 per cent of those polled planned to give to charity this year and 14 per cent planned to give more than last year.

The results are based on an online survey of 1,040 people carried out at the end of June by the market research company Consumer Intelligence.

Researchers found that 4 per cent of respondents had cancelled all their donations for 2015 and 15 per cent planned to give less than they did last year.

The south east region was found to contain the highest proportion of people who gave to charity, at 81 per cent. People in the West Midlands gave the highest average donation at £151 per person. People living in the south east gave the lowest amount on average, donating £105 per person.

Cambridge & Counties Bank also said that many cash deposit accounts aimed at charities were paying "derisory" rates of interest. Its research found that about a quarter of charities were receiving a rate of 0.1 per cent interest or less on balances of £50,000.

Miles Kirsopp, chief executive of the bank, said: "It’s great to see so many people digging deep to support good causes and it’s no surprise that the UK is one of the top 10 most charitable countries in the world. It’s important that charity cash deposits are made to work hard, but sadly this sector is poorly served by many banks, with most products paying poor rates of return."
