UK 'failed to live up to aid promise'

The World Can't Wait coalition of charities has accused the Government of deceiving the public about the amount of aid it gave to developing countries last year.

In 2005, 15 members of the EU set themselves the target of spending 0.33 per cent of their gross national income on aid by 2006.

According to figures published at a meeting of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development last week, three countries achieved the target only by including debt relief as aid. The UK was said to have inflated its aid figure by 28 per cent in this way.

The World Can't Wait seized on the figures as evidence that governments are failing to live up to promises made in response to the Make Poverty History campaign.
