'Uncontrollable' Tesco under fire

Friends of the Earth is calling on the UK Competition Commission to halt Tesco's "uncontrolled expansion", after the retail giant announced a record 18.7 per cent rise in pre-tax profits last week.

Vicki Hird, food campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said: "Tesco's sensational growth is sucking the life out of communities, farmers, workers and the environment. The authorities should be embarrassed that they have let things get this far."

To support its campaign, FOE and not-for-profit group Banana Link have created Tescopoly: Every Little Hurts, a website on which small retailers can find information and a facility to lobby government directly.

Tesco refuted criticism in FOE's June report, The Tesco Takeover, by citing its good performance on the Business in the Community Index.
