The mobile phone provider Vodafone and the donation website JustGiving have made their text donation service JustTextGiving available to individuals that want to raise money for charity.

The companies launched JustTextGiving, a service that they said would enable all UK-registered charities to raise money through text donations for free, in May.

So far it has only been available to charities but from today individual fundraisers will be able to set up their own unique code that can be used to direct text donations to their chosen charity.

Participants, who must be aged 18 or over, need to register on the JustTextGiving site and set up a unique code for their fundraising, which is all free of charge.

When they do this they will be allowed to choose the charity – which must also be registered with the service – that will benefit from any fundraising through the code.

The individual can then publicise the code at fundraising events, inviting donors to send donations by text. This message would have to contain the unique code and the amount the donor wanted to give, and be sent to 70070.

A spokeswoman for JustTextGiving said that individuals would be able to set up as many codes as they liked, and they could change the charity that benefited from a code once they had finished fundraising for a charity.

JustTextGiving has also released the results of a survey of more than 4,000 nationally representative people carried out by YouGov, which found that 52 per cent of Britons felt that being able to donate by text message would make giving to charity easier.

It found that the most popular fundraising activity among 25-34 year-olds was running, and among over-55s it was helping collect donations.

Seventy-six per cent of respondents said they actively avoided street fundraisers, and 60 per cent said they would give more if they could do so spontaneously, without being limited to debit or credit card donations.

Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone, said that so far more than 12,000 charities had signed up to use JustTextGiving, with hundreds more registering every day.

"Today is about putting the power of fundraising by text into individuals’ hands," he said. "Now individuals will be able to maximise their fundraising efforts for their chosen charity. Text donations are set to be worth £96m a year by 2014 and through JustTextGiving we can help make this goal a reality."
