Volunteer bureaux wait to hear about emergency funds

Cash-starved councils for voluntary service and volunteer bureaux will find out at the end of this month whether they have been chosen to benefit from a ?xA3;500,000 emergency fund.

Home secretary David Blunkett announced the fund, set up by the Active Community Unit, during a speech to the Government think-tank the Performance and Innovation Unit last week.

The National Association of Councils for Voluntary Service and the National Association of Volunteer Bureaux have written to members inviting bids for grants from the fund. An independent panel, including representatives of the Active Community Unit and the two umbrella bodies, will decide which groups have been successful in securing the funds.
