Volunteering pack for sports centres

Volunteering England and the Institute of Volunteering Research have launched a pack to help sports clubs measure the impact of their volunteers.

The pack includes a formula for calculating volunteer value in financial terms and a guide to running discussion groups.

It is based on research into how the 2004 Volunteering Impact Assessment Toolkit worked for 100 volunteers in rugby, hockey and riding clubs.

The research found that volunteering improved confidence and social awareness, but raised concerns about reliance on key individuals and lack of training.

It recommended that clubs should create specific volunteer coordinator positions, promote mentoring and buddying, and develop links with bodies such as volunteer centres.
