Volunteers Week: Toad warden tops bizarre helper list

Helping migrating toads to cross the road safely has been singled out as the most bizarre task a volunteer can take on by Volunteering England.

The volunteering body, which organises Volunteers Week, has compiled a list of the 21 most exciting, unusual and bizarre ways to volunteer in order to mark the 21st anniversary of the event.

Second on the list is the tandem bike rider who takes the front controls of a tandem bike with a blind rider behind.

Other unusual tasks include pet foster carer (looking after pets owned by hospitalised elderly people), neighbour dispute mediator (working with communities to resolve local clashes), Death Row pen pal (befriending people facing the US death penalty), skin camouflage instructor (teaching people with visible skin conditions to apply coverage creams), complementary therapist (providing acupuncture and massage for stressed new parents) and music sourcer (establishing music industry contacts for donations).
