Voucher scheme to 'buy' expertise

Charities will be able to 'buy in' academic expertise with a new voucher scheme operated by the Third Sector Research Centre.

Pete Alcock, director of the centre, told Third Sector that voluntary groups would receive vouchers they could use to contact academics for advice, in return for helping to disseminate research.

The centre's three 'capacity-building clusters', based at the universities of Lincoln, Middlesex and another yet to be named, will operate the scheme.

Cathy Pharoah, director of the ESRC Research Centre for Charitable Giving at the Cass Business School, welcomed the scheme, but added: "Some academics will be more interested than others in communicating with charities."
