Watch the birdie

This 'spontaneous snapshot' of a long-tailed tit at a window in a Suffolk garden was taken by 11-year-old Molly Armiger and is the overall winner of this year's RSPCA Young Photographer Awards, announced this week.

Andrew Forsyth, chief photographer at the RSPCA and competition judge, said Molly's winning shot "conveys a rare and intimate moment of connection with an animal".

The awards have run for 18 years and are designed to foster young people's appreciation and understanding of animals.
