WEDNESDAY - I work as a paramedic for North West Ambulance Service and fit my volunteering duties for St John Ambulance around my job. After work, I change into my SJA uniform and head to Crewe, where our volunteer unit has enrolled some new cadets. It's always great to see young people so keen to get involved. They can choose to become peer educators and train other young people in first aid, or sign up to our pilot service-delivery apprenticeship and provide first-aid cover at events.

THURSDAY - It's my day off and I have planned a round of golf. Alas, SJA has other ideas. I spend much of the day catching up on paperwork, returning calls from volunteers and organising a media-awareness session for my area managers. I attended a media training course recently and it showed me how important it is to get our message out there.

FRIDAY - I have a full day of SJA business again today. My shift patterns as a paramedic mean I can sometimes volunteer for full days during the week, which is great for catching up with people in the regional office in Stockport. I start the day with an 11am meeting with the training manager. Our volunteers are constantly refreshing their skills so that they can provide the best care.

I have several more meetings throughout the day and finish at 7pm with a catch-up with my district management team.

SATURDAY - I travel down to our national headquarters in London for a district managers forum. It is great to see other district managers and get to hear what they're doing. SJA has such a lot going on, such as covering events, providing an ambulance service and training in the community.

SUNDAY - The Chester Half Marathon is on and I'm volunteering with SJA to help make sure that injured runners get fast and effective treatment. We see all sorts of injuries at events, from blisters to broken legs, but there's always one thing that's the same: the people we treat are really glad that someone with first-aid skills is on hand.

Charity property: could you be entitled to a huge VAT saving?

Charity property: could you be entitled to a huge VAT saving?

Partner Content: Presented By Markel

When a property is being constructed, VAT is charged at the standard rate. But if you're a charity, health body, educational institution, housing association or finance house, the work may well fall into a category that justifies zero-rating - and you could make a massive saving
