MONDAY - The week begins with a phone call to our chair. We are working together on the invitation list for a donor event. I then attend a management meeting to get an update on this week's activities, but after that I find time to do some planning for the donor event. In the afternoon, I get to talk fundraising with one of my peers.
TUESDAY - The director of research and policy provides us with an update on developments in MS research. The society turns 60 next year and we want to focus on what we still need to achieve to beat MS for good. The good news is that there is real cause for hope, but it's clear it will cost many more millions of pounds. With that challenge ringing in my ears, it's on to a fundraising team meeting. We discuss the recent gift of £20,000 worth of Dr Who memorabilia. Our supporters give in all sorts of ways.
WEDNESDAY - Today is a thinking and planning day. I'm preparing a presentation on fundraising development for the board. During the presentation there will be minimal time to share our fundraising successes, so every minute is valuable. Preparation and simplicity are vital.
THURSDAY - I have a key appointment to make, so I meet a recruitment agent to search for the ideal candidate. Fundraising is not only about asking for money, and I'm really impressed that the agent says his role is not to sell me a candidate but to find the right person for the job.
FRIDAY - At last, it's back to some fundraising. We analyse the income generated from our Cake Break event and plan new ideas for 2013. I then get an update from the fundraising team on possible corporate donors, donor recruitment figures and potential legacies. Finally, I get to do some 'donor contact', which I always enjoy. First, I provide a trust with a six-month review of its grant, then I speak to one of our high-profile supporters to discuss their involvement in our 60th birthday celebrations, and finally I thank a supporter for their gift in memory of a loved one.
