'We'll fund nurse, if she's attractive'

A corporate donor recently offered to sponsor a Macmillan nurse as long as she was "blue-eyed, brown-haired and attractive" so it could use her in publicity shots, it emerged last week.

The politically incorrect proposal was revealed by Edward Hodgkins, head of corporate partnerships at Macmillan Cancer Relief, at a Third Sector conference on improving partnerships between charities and business.

"In the past, I have come across companies that were more demanding and believed they could dictate to us how we delivered our services, due mainly to a lack of understanding of what we do, " Hodgkins said.

"On these rare occasions, we had to manage expectations and move forward with the partnership only if an understanding could be reached."

Macmillan declined to say how this particular request was dealt with, but emphasised that its relationships with corporate partners were normally excellent.
