We will make Gift Aid work better, says minister

The Government will work to improve payroll giving and Gift Aid, a senior treasury minister promised Charity Tax Group members at the organisation's AGM.

"We want to make sure we're using both payroll giving and Gift Aid as effectively as we possibly can," said Jane Kennedy, Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

"The amount of money that charities gain from them has gone up hugely in the past 10 years, but there is more to do."

Kennedy also heard concerns about substantial donor legislation and irrecoverable VAT, and said she would work with the sector to solve these problems.

The CTG said Kennedy's speech had contained "positive messages".

"It was what we felt was the start of a very useful and productive dialogue," said the group's director, Helen Donoghue.
