What is it like to work at Canine Partners?

Third Sector Promotion Canine Partners

Megan Knight, HR co-ordinator at Canine Partners, tells us about the team culture and exciting director of marketing and income generation career opportunity currently available.

Tell me about Canine Partners and the work you do

Canine Partners is a registered charity that transforms the lives of people with physical disabilities by partnering them with assistance dogs. Our amazing dogs bring a greater independence and quality of life to their partners, offering security, companionship, and practical help with everyday household tasks. These life-changing dogs also provide psychological and social benefits including increased independence, confidence, social interaction and self-esteem.

We receive no government funding and rely solely on donations from the public and legacies to help us continue our life-transforming work.

What makes Canine Partners a great place to work?

  • The people
  • Passion for the work that we do
  • The location of our two training centres, set in rural surroundings in West Sussex and Leicestershire
  • Having pet dogs in the offices and having dogs in training on-site
  • The opportunity to make a real difference

What is the team culture like?

98% of our staff said they are proud to work for Canine Partners. We host lots of team building events such as pub games nights, barbeques, and an annual rounders match.Office staff work at the training centre so are able to see dogs training and clients working with their new dogs - this helps to motivate staff by seeing the progression and the end goal. Ultimately, everyone pitches in and helps each other out.

Are you recruiting at the moment?

We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative and inspirational director of marketing and income generation to lead and develop our passionate team and increase awareness and engagement with our charity.

This will include developing a digital strategy to support our key organisational objectives to maximise our profile, awareness and income. It will also involve leading the development and management of the Canine Partners brand, aligning our supporter and product propositions to strengthen our position in the market.

Our successful candidate will lead and inspire a motivated and successful fundraising team to increase long-term financial support for the work of Canine Partners. They will grow and nurture income from existing streams to increase profitability and sustainability as well as exploring
new opportunities.

What kind of people make a good fit?

The type of people that would enjoy working at Canine Partners are people who align with our values of:

  • Passion
  • Excellence
  • Innovation
  • The personal touch
  • Teamwork
  • Respect

You will be someone with bags of enthusiasm, a passion for making a difference, an interest in working for a charity and obviously you need to enjoy being around dogs!

What exciting projects are you working on?

We’re working hard to raise money to finish building our kennel block in the Midlands. We have lots of plans for our upcoming 30-year anniversary (in 2020). We are also in the final stages of preparing to open our waiting list to new applications this year.

What opportunities for career development do you offer?

When our dog trainers join us they take on a comprehensive training and mentoring programme. They will have the opportunity to shadow experienced members of the team and learn on the job. Eventually they will gain the skills in order to mentor and train new members of the team, work with more complex client needs and carry out domiciliary training.

    • Welcoming, friendly and inclusive team
    • Fun – every day is different
    • Challenging to use limited resources (time/money) but a good opportunity to be innovative and creative
